Why Template Websites Don’t Work

You have a website-congratulations-so does everyone else.  Question: Is your website a template website? Do you even know?  First of all, what is a template website?  A template website is better thought of as a cookie cutter website: a website that is reproduced over and over and over and over with the click of a button, including the content that comes with it. Colors, pictures and logos are changed but its essentially a clone of a clone of a clone of a clone of another website.

To understand why this is a detriment to your business you have to first understand how search engines work.  Search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing are special sites on the Internet that help us find information written or held on other websites. There are differences in the ways various search engines work, but they all perform three basic tasks:

  • They scan the Internet — or select pieces of the Internet — based on important words.
  • They keep an index of the text, pictures, videos, logos etc they find, and most importantly-where they find them.
  • They allow consumers to look for words or combinations of words found in that index.

In order for a search engine to tell a consumer where a document is, it must first be found.  To find text, pictures, videos, logos  on the millions of web pages that exist, a search engine uses special software called spiders .  Spiders index or build lists of the words found on websites.  Do you see where I am going with this?

Template websites get sold over and over with the same content which means over time there could be 1000′s of websites with the same content on them.  How is this bad for you?  Search engines have an appetite for unique content.  They give us the most relevant results for the search that is being conducted.  So, if you only take the content they provide, don’t add to or replace it, the search engines have a hard time finding you.  Excuse me, they will find you but you will be 900th on a very long list.  What is wrong with that?  Research shows that 75-80% of clicks in search engine results will occur on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd result.

Looking for a real estate agent? I copied text from a template real estate website, pasted in into Google to reveal this result:

Looking for an eye doctor?  Obviously there are a lot of doctor’s out there that “refuse to cut corners” :-)

In our experience, the biggest hurdle in building a website isn’t the design and coding, it is generating unique content that helps you get found. Template websites provide a way for the website owner to jump over this hurdle as they come with content pre-written. The problem? There is nothing unique about them. At PRO-found Marketing, we help PRO-fessionals get “found” online. We do this by starting with a website that works, WordPress.  We fill it with unique content, videos, pictures, produced with your goal in mind: to attract the consumer you want to find you, your product or service.

Web design and search engine marketing/optimization are just a few of the services we provide at PRO-found Marketing. What can we do to help you get found online?
